The Wizard’s Story

“How did you escape?”

It had taken Saira four days to work up the courage to ask. The wizard led them across the flatlands at a punishing pace, sometimes so quickly that Saira wondered if he was trying to discourage questions by keeping them out of breath. Several times she had thought to ask him about Castle Maymuna as they sat around the campfire at night, but the wizard, as if sensing her question hanging in the air, would scowl and go off to gather more firewood.

Finally, however, Saira could stand it no more. Once, she had been happy enough to trust the wizard’s anger towards the Imperator. Now, however, with their path to Castle Maymuna clear, and the wizard’s heritage revealed, his silence raised too many questions. Now, Saira stopped walking and let her words hang in the air, staring at the wizard. When he frowned at her, she glared back.

“I don’t like to speak of it.” His white brows were drawn together forbiddingly.

“I think we have a right to know,” Demetrios opined, and Saira jumped. Since their party left Tianshan, the bard had barely spoken. Whenever they stopped to take a break, he would walk back along the road as if drawn back to Dragon’s Perch by an invisible chain. He hummed under his breath sometimes as they walked, and his lips moved as he pored over the Wuqi’s stories by the light of their nighttime campfire, but for all his veneer of normalcy, he hardly seemed to remember that Saira and the wizard existed.

Leave him be, the wizard advised when Saira asked him what to do. The lad’s had quite a shock. He would say no more, and Saira could make no sense of it. Still, she left the bard to walk in silence, and stare into the flames at night without speaking. It was a surprise now to see him involved in the conversation, but the wizard hardly seemed impressed.

“It is none of your concern,” he told Demetrios sternly.

“I think it is.” Saira felt a surge of anger and tried to keep it from her voice.

“Oh? Is there any reason we must discuss this?”

“Yes!” Saira stopped walking. “You keep saying it’s a big mystery, what happened there, and it is! And how you escaped is part of that, isn’t it?”

“I did not escape,” the wizard said precisely. “I was not there to start with.”

“And you were the only one who was not at the castle because…” Demetrios’s voice trailed off in speculation and one eyebrow raised.

“If you’re suggesting something, young man, spit it out.”

“Fine! I will!” Demetrios stared him down, dark eyes burning. “When only one member of a family survives, there are questions to be asked. Especially when everyone thinks all the Maymunas were killed! It’s not like you’re in Urdinna, seeking justice from the Imperator.
